Research studies have shown that eating a whole food plant-based diet may help prevent, treat, and even reverse some of the leading causes of death, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Participants in these studies have reported experiencing improvements in weight loss, digestion, energy, sleep, vitality, physical functioning and general health. Studies have also shown to improve mental health and emotional states such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, sense of well-being, and daily functioning. 3 out of 4 people consuming a standard American diet don’t eat a single piece of fruit in a given day. 9 out of 10 don’t reach the minimum recommended daily intake of vegetables. On a standard American diet, 63% of calories come from refined and processed foods, 25% of calories come from animal-based foods and only 12% of calories come from plant-based foods (6% of which come from French fries). Only 6% of calories on a standard American diet are coming from health-promoting fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. On a scale of 1 to 10, the standard American diet would rate about a 1.
